We are DC APA Film. We love hanging out at H Street. We love checking out bands at The Black Cat and Rock an Roll Hotel. We love the Cherry Blossoms. Most of us love eating at Ben’s Chili Bowl. We love DC, VA and MD. Our 11th annual film festival will take place from October 7 to 16, 2010. We work long hours and don’t get paid for it. We do it because of our love of films.

Although the emphasis of our 10-day film festival is the Asian Pacific American experience, since 2007 we have also conducted a “Point of View” workshop in film-making for area high school students. They learn how to write a script, direct actors, set up scenes, operate equipment, employ make-up and costumes, and edit a film into a short production, which is then shown at the festival.

We also have killer parties, fun workshops, panel discussions and hip merchandise!

Need another reason why you should sponsor us? We are a registered nonprofit, tax exempt organization under 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, which means your donation is 100 percent tax deductible.

Find out more about being a sponsor by clicking here to view our Sponsorship Packet.

If you have any questions, you can email Richard Fidler and Ron Sanchez at sponsorship(at)apafilm.org

“It’s just me, a regular Asian American guy, writing about a few things that I find particularly noteworthy or interesting. More than anything, a place to express myself and work it all out.”

The site points out racism and notes any and all appearances of Asians in mass media and popular culture (the good and the bad).

Angry Asian Man blogs about everything Asian, from Michelle Rhee, to Playmobil’s Asian Family figures.
Angry Asian Man will introduce you to lots of stuff that you’ve never heard of, like MegaBot. MegaBot? Angry Asian Man: Yes, MegaBot! Me: And his shirt’s yellow! Where did they get those hideous threads? Okay, moving along now…

When reading his blog, just remember that these are Angry Asian Man‘s opinions – nothing more, nothing less.

DC APA Film is delighted that Angry Asian Man is once again a sponsor of our festival. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for our monumental 10th anniversary, please click here for sponsorship information or email Richard Fidler at richard[at]apafilm.org.

You like us, right? We like you. So how about becoming our friend?

DC APA Film’s Point of View (P.O.V) Youth Filmmaker Program, where high school students learn about filmmaking, was a tremendous success this year thanks tremendously to Ventana Productions. They hosted the students for six consecutive Saturdays and let them use their cameras, editing, sound and lighting equipment. Ventana Productions is much more than a sponsor to DC APA Film: They’re like our BFF.

Ventana has a talented staff and their award-winning editing department is recognized as one of the most elite editing teams in the D.C. area. Their crew excels at all types of videography including commercials, documentaries and corporate material. DC APA Film’s Chris Tsou, who was part of the P.O.V. program, is a senior producer at Ventana.

Ventana Productions, founded more than a decade ago, is a full service video production facility with both Standard Definition and High Definition capabilities. Their mission is to provide clients with a creative environment where their tools and talents bring concepts to life.

This particular blogger, now located in the East Coast, is in pre-production for his next short film. But my crew and equipment are all located in the 323. A huge dilemma. What’s that, Ventana rents equipment? Sweet! They also offer media tours, duplications, studio services and much more. DC APA Film is grateful for RTNDF’s support.

As the educational arm of the Radio-Television News Directors Association, RTNDF offers professional development opportunities for working and aspiring journalists and journalism educators.

The Foundation’s primary objectives include: promoting discussion of ethics and integrity in news coverage; developing leadership skills among news professionals and sound management practices in news organizations; encouraging diversity in news organizations and in news coverage; assessing the impact of technological change on the news industry; fostering exchanges of ideas and perspectives at the local, national and international levels; and supporting U.S. First Amendment rights, worldwide press freedom and the public’s right to know.

On a personal note, your humble blogger was in the journalism industry for more than a decade and the experience will forever have a special place in my heart. For those considering a career in journalism, I say emphatically GO FOR IT! Yours truly had the greatest experience covering sports for a nationwide paper and website for seven and a half years, then worked at a newswire service for another four and a half years covering news and public policy. I have a ton of respect for organizations such as RTNDF because of all that they do for journalism.

The important work of the RTNDF is funded through grants and support from RTNDA members. Click here for more information about RTNDF.

Will the Gecko, Caveman and Kash show up at the 10th Annual DC APA Film Festival?

Well, they could since auto insurance giant GEICO is one of the proud sponsors of our festival. As a non-profit event planned by an unpaid staff of volunteers, the DC APA Film Festival would not exist without the generous support of corporations such as GEICO.

Most of you know what GEICO does so yours truly doesn’t need to blog about what they do. If you need insurance for your car, boat, motorcycle, ATV, or need life or other insurance, check out GEICO by clicking here.

Let’s watch the Gecko, the Caveman and Kash in action.

True there are more entertaining commercials featuring Gecko. Okay, I’ll admit it: this blogger picked this one because I have a crush on Lucy.

I like this Caveman commercial because of the song “Remind Me” by Norwegian band Royksopp.

Most of you are aware that this is a song by Rockwell featuring Michael Jackson, right? Just checking.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for our monumental 10th anniversary, please click here for sponsorship information or email Richard Fidler at richard[at]apafilm.org

From movie stars, musicians, and skate-boarders to toys, technology, and history, Giant Robot covers cool aspects of Asian and Asian-American pop culture.

We dig Giant Robot because they’re one of the first American publications that featured Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan and Jet Li years before they were mainstream in America’s movie screens. They also are a long-time supporter and most recently a producer of several Asian American films.

“It’s great to see magazines like Giant Robot thrive in a time that’s difficult for print magazines to succeed,” said DC APA Film President Anna Petrillo. “They have become leaders in bringing Asian and Asian American artists and culture into the forefront, a mission that we share.”

Born in 1994, Giant Robot was created by publisher and co-editor Eric Nakamura and co-editor Martin Wong. With no budget, the first issue was a stapled-and-folded photocopied digest with an edition of 240. Giant Robot has now grown over 100 times larger and has gained accolades as the best zines according to publications such as L.A. Weekly, L.A. New Times, Wired, and Zine Guide. Giant Robot can now be found in magazine racks around the world.

DC APA Film will be raffling off gift subscriptions of Giant Robot during our festival. Visit our site to find out the date.

Besides magazines, Giant Robot also sells artist goods, designer vinyl dolls, mini-figures, plush dolls, stationeries, art, t-shirts, and other products.

You can pick up a copy of Giant Robot at bookstores such as Barnes & Noble, Virgin, Borders and other outlets, or use their online store.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for our monumental 10th anniversary, please click here for sponsorship information or email Richard Fidler at richard[at]apafilm.org

DC APA Film, an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization that has been recommended by the Washington Post Style Section, has had more than 20,000 in attendance during our festival since 2000.

DC APA Film is proud to announce its partnership with Hyphen magazine for our 10th Annual Film Festival on October 1 to October 10, 2009. Tuesday, October 6 will be “Sponsored by Hyphen Magazine Night” and we will be giving away Hyphen merchandise such as a one-year subscription, t-shirts and issues of the magazine.

Like APA Film, Hyphen is produced by an all-volunteer staff. Hyphen is a magazine about Asian America for the culturally and politically savvy who want substantive and well-researched articles about complicated issues that affect Asian Americans.

You can win a t-shirt and more stuff on October 6!

Unlike other Asian American publications, Hyphen is more political and news oriented magazine, with stories about social justice issues and progressive politics. Hyphen also covers pop culture and the arts, but is more interested in underground independent artists over established ones. Hyphen was founded in 2003 by a group of Bay Area Asian American journalists, artists and activists.

On October 6, APA Film will be showing many of the best short films at the U.S. Navy Memorial Burke Theater in Washington D.C.’s Penn Quarter area. A number of the filmmakers will be flying in for the screening of their films. You can meet and talk to them after the screenings.

In addition to meeting the filmmakers, you’ll also have a chance to win cool merchandise.

Mark your calendar for this date because it is guaranteed to be a fun and exciting night!
