Although the emphasis of our 10-day film festival is the Asian Pacific American experience, since 2007 we have also conducted a “Point of View” workshop in film-making for area high school students. They learn how to write a script, direct actors, set up scenes, operate equipment, employ make-up and costumes, and edit a film into a short production, which is then shown at the festival.

We also have killer parties, fun workshops, panel discussions and hip merchandise!

DC APA Film’s Point of View (P.O.V) Youth Filmmaker Program, where high school students learn about filmmaking, was a tremendous success this year thanks tremendously to Ventana Productions. They hosted the students for six consecutive Saturdays and let them use their cameras, editing, sound and lighting equipment. Ventana Productions is much more than a sponsor to DC APA Film: They’re like our BFF.

Ventana has a talented staff and their award-winning editing department is recognized as one of the most elite editing teams in the D.C. area. Their crew excels at all types of videography including commercials, documentaries and corporate material. DC APA Film’s Chris Tsou, who was part of the P.O.V. program, is a senior producer at Ventana.

As the educational arm of the Radio-Television News Directors Association, RTNDF offers professional development opportunities for working and aspiring journalists and journalism educators.

On a personal note, your humble blogger was in the journalism industry for more than a decade and the experience will forever have a special place in my heart. For those considering a career in journalism, I say emphatically GO FOR IT! Yours truly had the greatest experience covering sports for a nationwide paper and website for seven and a half years, then worked at a newswire service for another four and a half years covering news and public policy.  I have a ton of respect for organizations such as RTNDF because of all that they do for journalism.

We dig Giant Robot because they’re one of the first American publications that featured Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan and Jet Li years before they were mainstream in America’s movie screens. They also are a long-time supporter and most recently a producer of several Asian American films.

“It’s great to see magazines like Giant Robot thrive in a time that’s difficult for print magazines to succeed,” said DC APA Film President Anna Petrillo. “They have become leaders in bringing Asian and Asian American artists and culture into the forefront, a mission that we share.”

Born in 1994, Giant Robot was created by publisher and co-editor Eric Nakamura and co-editor Martin Wong. With no budget, the first issue was a stapled-and-folded photocopied digest with an edition of 240. Giant Robot has now grown over 100 times larger and has gained accolades as the best zines according to publications such as L.A. Weekly, L.A. New Times, Wired, and Zine Guide. Like APA Film, Hyphen is produced by an all-volunteer staff. Hyphen is a magazine about Asian America for the culturally and politically savvy who want substantive and well-researched articles about complicated issues that affect Asian Americans.

Unlike other Asian American publications, Hyphen is more political and news oriented magazine, with stories about social justice issues and progressive politics. Hyphen also covers pop culture and the arts, but is more interested in underground independent artists over established ones. Hyphen was founded in 2003 by a group of Bay Area Asian American journalists, artists and activists.

On October 6, APA Film will be showing many of the best short films at the U.S. Navy Memorial Burke Theater in Washington D.C.’s Penn Quarter area. A number of the filmmakers will be flying in for the screening of their films. You can meet and talk to them after the screenings.

In addition to meeting the filmmakers, you’ll also have a chance to win cool merchandise.
