This was a fun way to kick off the festival’s first shorts program. This film directed by Vincent Lin is sort of a tribute to any independent film director who’s had a hard time getting his or her film made. It tells the fantasy that probably every filmmaker has had at one point or another: of setting off on one’s own, and making the most kick-ass, action/romance/zombie flick ever! What an amazing show! The D.C. APA Film Festival is definitely one of my favorites because it always manages to get its hands on the best new material out there. This evening’s hybrid show format was a pretty unique experience for me. Filmmaker Helie Lee performed live to narrate her 6-month journey trying to pass as a man in LA’s Koreatown. What a delightful way to kick off the 11th annual DC APA Film Festival! This film is just brimming with love-sick blunderers, the long-suffering women who put up with their pathetic antics, and and a bunch of cheap thugs in the sweetest, orange, polyester leisure-suits you’ve seen since junior prom. And, it’s hilarious too! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a film that’s featured such expert comedic timing. By the end of this film my cheeks hurt because I’d been grinning like a fool throughout the whole thing.
