Li Mei (Huang Lu) has never been more than five miles outside of her small rural village in China, but dreams of the life beyond the reaches of her nagging mother and this dull town. A run-in with a local thug convinces her to leave her village for the big city, where unable to hold a job in the factory, she finds work in the Love Salon, where haircuts are not the only services provided. Soon, Li falls in love with customer and hit-man Spikey, but when the love affair takes an unexpectedly tragic turn, she finds herself headed West.

Is Mei a victim of fate or is her plight of her own making? Is she a deplorable parasite or a resourceful survivor? A film adaptation of director Xiaolu Guo’s own book and winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival, this film will have you deep in thought long after it has ended.
