APA FILM SPONSORS FILM SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION ON ASIAN AMERICAN FAMILIES

Asian Pacific American Film (APA Film), a DC-based nonprofit arts organization, will sponsor a film screening and panel discussion entitled "One Country, Two Worlds: Asian American Families Today." This event will feature a viewing of several short films followed by a panel discussion on the unique issues that all kinds of Asian American families face today, including the challenge of bridging language, generational, cultural and even racial gaps between parents and their young and adult children.

The event will be held Saturday, July 19, from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Johnson Center Cinema at the George W. Johnson Center, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA.

Featured films include:

  • Beancake (12 min) - A boy and his mother encounter his first day of school.
  • Driving Lessons (24 min). A girl’s complex relationship with her father and mother evolves in this subtle but powerful film.
  • A Great Deal! (18 min). A young woman spends her time alone in her apartment, catering to her turtle and fielding calls from her demanding mom.

Featured panelists include:

  • Hoa Burke (Multicultural Panel of the Center for Promoting Family Learning and Involvement, Fairfax County Public Schools)
  • Gail Allison, Ph.D. (Middle School Program Specialist, College Partnership Program)
  • various leaders in the fields of education, film, and family services
