Kim (Bai Ling) is a timid and conflicted 20-year-old in the 1970s, struggling to sort out her relationship with her traditional mother while forging a future for herself in college. Despite her attempt to tread the fine line between dutiful daughter and independent woman, Kim becomes pregnant and is forced by her family to marry the baby's hostile father. Overwhelmed by the pressures of new motherhood and threats of domestic violence, Kim flees to Hong Kong, leaving her newborn daughter, Genie, to be raised by her grandmother. Fast forward to 19 years later, Genie has become a bright young woman loyal to her grandmother's traditional community values and immersed in the vibrant New York hip hop scene. When Kim resurfaces with plans to move to New York for good, the three women are forced to face their past and resolve their family history. Also stars Will Yun Lee (TORQUE) and Anthony “Treach” Criss from the rap group Naughty by Nature.
